FUN & GAMES: Controversy Over New Legos For Girls

Lego toys have always been for both girls and boys — but boys, in general, seem to enjoy them more. This is why, in the past, many of the Lego sets have had strong male themes. Lots of action stuff, vehicles and monsters.

In an attempt to get more girls involved, the company rolled out a new Lego collection aimed at girls called Lego Friends — and some health and equal-rights activists are freaking out.

What’s the problem?

Well, the new line features girl characters with slim figures and stylish clothes.

Is that it? Yes. That’s it.

Critics of the new toys say the Legos promote body dissatisfaction and send a message to girls that says “being pretty is more important than who you are or what you can do.” They’ve even gone so far as to start online petitions to protest the toy line.

So, if you want to get your hands on a Lego Butterfly Beauty Shop or a Lego Fashion Designer Workshop, you better act before the Lego company buckles from the pressure and pulls the toys off the shelf. (Los Angeles Times)

Do you think this is a problem? Is this really sexist or should they have invented girly Legos years ago?
